Econocaribe Business Dictionary

Econocaribe: The Business Dictionary

Editorial design for a maritime merchandise shipping company.

Role

Econocaribe contacted me in need for a proposal for their business dictionary. They wanted to update their corporate image with a more modern look, above all for the dictionary cover. Following the lines of their established corporate identity, the update maintained the original style and palette, but introduced a whole new look.

The task

This is one of the most effective disciplines of graphic design when presenting specific content to a specific audience. The distribution of content, the specific use of images (zero photos, and just very few illustrations) and the high density of written content come together to produce an ideal format to develop any type of subject matter in depth and to deal extensively with everything related to information architecture.

I have zero knowledge of International Trade or maritime industry. But my skills in graphic and editorial design gave me enough confidence to tailored a company book that needed a fresh look, and, most importantly, get employee’s attention every time they needed to use this dictionary.

Usage of clean but impactful corporate photography was used in key sections within the book.

The reader connects with the word through design

Followed my client's directions to create this book cover design. simple, vibrant, and attractive for the employees, so they can stop and look at this book at least once. I have used Adobe Photoshop as my primary tool for making these designs and presentations. I have used some mockups as well to showcase the cover in different positions so that the client can understand what he is getting from me.

  • Once the concept was approved, all the content were provided by Econocaribe, after several iterations on the content as it was necessary to reduce the amount of content from the dictionary.

  • Internal pages (≈140) were built in Adobe InDesign. Back in the day, we needed to make sure the colors and typography used had the right size to avoid readability issues.

  • We did several tryouts printing the main sections of the book, just to make sure the colors were accurate following the initial concept made on Photoshop. It took us a while to send this to print as it was crucial to make sure there were no typos in the content.
